What is Resolution Together?

Resolution Together is a comprehensive advice service provided to a separating couple by a single lawyer. It is most suited to those who want to manage their separation or divorce together and obtain joint legal advice.

Individuals must give their informed consent to sharing all the relevant factual and financial information required for advice to be given by the lawyer to enable couples to reach their decisions together. The lawyer will offer guidance and advice to reach a final resolution.

What is different about Resolution Together?

Traditionally couples obtain separate advice from different lawyers who often take a positional approach. This positions the couple against each other from the outset and can result in costly legal fees and aggressive court proceedings. The final outcome is often somewhere in the middle of each position. When a couple has children this approach can have long-term damaging consequences for both the children and parents, and this should be avoided.

Resolution Together allows couples to instruct one lawyer who will provide advice and guidance to them both on the law and prioritise the best interests of their family.

Benefits of Resolution Together

1. Cost Effective

By sharing a single lawyer couples can significantly reduce their legal fees.

2. Maintaining privacy

Any information shared is always kept confidential which means there is less risk of a couple's personal and sensitive information being accessible to third parties. Resolving matters outside of the Court process helps preserve a couple’s privacy.

3. Streamlined Communication

By having joint meetings with one lawyer there is less chance of miscommunication and no conflicting advice. This encourages cooperation and better communication.

4. Faster Resolution

Meetings and advice can be organised quickly so couples can begin negotiations and make decisions efficiently. This allows a couple to reach a solution for their family without unnecessary delay.

5. Lasting solutions

Arrangements reached together are more likely to work for the couple and their family resulting in long-lasting solutions.

Is Resolution Together suitable for my family?

We know that the most important decision couples will have to make from the outset is how to progress with their separation or divorce, particularly as there are so many options to choose from. The decision can be difficult, but your lawyer will carefully guide you so you can decide on the next steps that need to be taken for your specific circumstances.

Resolution Together is suitable for couples whose joint aim is to reach an outcome together which meets their needs, and if they are parents, the needs of their children.

Resolution Together is unlikely to be appropriate if there has been any form of abuse in the relationship, safeguarding or capacity concerns or where there is a significant power imbalance that cannot be managed appropriately. Resolution Together would be inappropriate if one or both individuals are not prepared to negotiate with the other, or where either person intends to, or believes that the other may seek to ‘hide’ information, especially about finances.

We can explore whether Resolution Together is a suitable way forward for you and your family at your initial appointment.
